TALAT: “EU DOES NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY TO ISSUE GUARANTEE”

President Mehmet Ali Talat stated that the only guarantee system is the existing one for the Turkish Side and added: “EU does not have the capacity to issue such a guarantee”

Talat indicated that once it is proved that “there would be no need for guarantees in Cyprus ”, they may discuss about this; however if the Greek Cypriots defend that “ Cyprus does not need guarantors in the EU”, this is insignificant for North Cyprus .

“As we all know; if there had not been any guarantees in 1963 and 1974, Turkish Cypriots would not be in this current situation. Thus, everybody has to understand that we need the guarantee system” Talat said.

President Talat stated that through cooperation with South Cyprus, their aim is to come up with a solution and said: “Either at the end of the year or early in the next year, we’re anticipating a referendum; if we can manage that, we will have solved the Cyprus Issue.”
