44TH ANNIVERSARY OF ERENKOY RESISTANCE

The 44th Anniversary of the Erenkoy Resistance and martyrs who fell during the resistance will be remembered with a ceremony in Erenkoy village today.

Resistance of the people of Erenkoy together with the university students, who came to Erenkoy in order to defend the country during the international conflicts in Cyprus in 1963, has become one of the legendary incidents in the history of Turkish Cypriots. At the incidents experienced in Erenkoy , Turkey had to intervene with the Turkish war planes in 8 August 1964 by using its limited intervention right arising from guarantor-ship rights in order to support Erenkoy mucahits(fighters) who were in trouble with the superior forces of Greek – Greek Cypriot sides and to protect independence of Cyprus. After the limited intervention of Turkey in 8 August 1964, a new period began in the historical process experienced in Cyprus.

II. HRISOSTOMOS “CHURCH HAS A VOICE IN CYPRUS PROBLEM”

Archbishop of the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church II. Hrisostomos stated “The church will always have a voice and view for the Cyprus problem; although we reach to a reconciliation solution." II. Hrisostomos emphasized that when a referendum will be held for a solution, the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church will express its view openly, and everybody knows this. Simerini newspaper published in South Cyprus wrote that II. Hrisostomos referred to his net message at the meetings with both leader of Greek Cypriot Administration Dimitris Hristofyas and leaders of Greek Cypriot political parties that the Church will have the view at the Cyprus problem and nobody will derogate from the Church.
