ERCAKICA: “WE WILL NOT IMPLEMENT ORAMS DECISION”

The Presidency Spokesperson Hasan Ercakica said that the TRNC will not implement the British Court of Appeal’s verdict on the Orams Case and so, the Court should find a way to implement its decision.

Stating that the TRNC will do whatever it can in order to protect Orams couple and will not let them alone on this issue, Ercakica added: “if Apostolides wants this property back, he can apply to the Turkish Cypriot Property Commission.

Commenting on the possible effect of the decision on the negotiation process, he said that he thought it will not make a negative effect on it. He emphasized: “This is not new. (It is not a surprise). We are under embargoes and the decision is a just different example of these embargoes.

On the other hand, the Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said that the Greek Cypriots’ lawsuits filed in European Courts on property issue are continued with the support of the Greek Cypriot administration and added that while the two sides are negotiating at the table, taking issue to the court will help nothing but only raises tension.

SUMMIT AT PRESIDENCY

It was stated that a summit was realized at the presidency yesterday and the decision of Orams Case was evaluated.

President Mehmet Ali Talat, Prime Minister Dervıs Eroglu, Turkish Republic ’s Lefkosa Ambassador Sakır Fakılı, Minister of Foreign Affairs Huseyin Ozgurgun, Minister of Finance Ersin Tatar, Minister of Interior and Local Administration Ilkay Kamil and government authorities and barristers participated to the meeting.

During his short statement made after the meeting, President Mehmet Ali Talat said that British Court of Appeal gave the decision of Orams case and this issue will be evaluated. Expressing that barristers and authorities of all institutions of the government participated to the meeting; Talat said ‘We will make evaluations’.

Moreover, stressing that the decision of Orams Case will have various effects, Talat added that the process which started with Orams Case and continued with the decision of European Court of Justice has a negative effective on negotiation process.

Talat: ‘These negative effects have reached to wide dimensions. We will evaluate these together. We will decide what to do’.

FIRST PRESIDENT DENKTAS: “PROPERTY ISSUE SHALL BE SOLVED GLOBALLY WITH A SETTLEMENT”

First President Rauf Denktas pointed out that the British Court of Appeal’s Orams decision was a political decision and added that the property issue shall be solved globally with a settlement which shall solve the Cyprus problem as a whole. He added that this was indicated also in the Gali Set of Ideas which was also approved by the UN lawyers.

In case the Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias insists on not accepting the global solution of the property issue after this decision of the British Court Denktas said that there was no use in continuing negotiations.

Denktas said that if the British Government wanted the decision of the Court could have been “ Cyprus negotiations are on a critical phase” and could have delayed the case, this was what they had talked however they did not act accordingly.

Denktas said that they were trying to pressurize the Turkish side with this decision and said : “we have to react to this decision”

Denktas insisted that no one should be sad about this because whatever decision the Greek Cypriot side takes this could not be applied in the TRNC, the TRNC boundaries and title deeds were valid.


NATIONAL UNITY PARTY VISITED DISY

TRNC Prime Minister – the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) Dervis Eroglu met with the leader of the Greek Cypriot Democratic Rally Party (DISY) Nicos Anastasiades yesterday. Mr. Eroglu and Mr. Anastasiades headed the meeting between the two party delegations which took place at DISY (Democratic Rally Party) Headquarters in South Lefkosa . The visit to South Cyprus by Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu was his first since 1974.

The UBP delegation headed by National Unity Party leader and Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu consisted of UBP Secretary General Irsen Kucuk, Minister of Finance Ersin Tatar, Minister of Economy and Energy Sunat Atun and party representative Osman Ertug.

A joint statement prepared by the parties was read out at the end of the meeting which lasted for nearly two hours.

The two party leaders then held a joint press conference where they answered journalist’s questions.
The statement said that the two leaders and their delegations had the opportunity to continue their dialogue and to exchange views in the same cordial atmosphere that was established on their first meeting.

Both Eroglu and Anastasiadis underlined the importance of a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus Problem but also acknowledged that there are areas where further discussion between them is needed in order to reach convergence.

Speaking after the meeting, Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu told reporters that he had held a very sincere meeting with DISY leader Nicos Anastasiadis during which they found the opportunity to reinforce the friendship they created at their first meeting.

The UBP also said that both he and Mr. Anastasias shared a common desire to reach a lasting and sustainable solution in Cyprus .

“It’s only natural for differences of opinion and views to exist between the two parties concerning the 40 year old Cyprus Problem” he said.

The UBP leader and Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu also said he did not believe that the Cyprus Problem, which couldn’t be solved through years of negotiations, could be solved in just two meetings.
“Nevertheless, taking into account our past experiences, we focused on the need to reach a sustainable solution to the Cyprus Problem” Eroglu added.

Explaining that they will continue to host such meetings in the near future, the Prime Minister said that both parties will continue to work towards reaching an agreement.

For his part, the DISY leader Nicos Anastasiadis said that they desired a lasting, bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution to the Cyprus Problem based on established UN parameters.

TRNC ASSEMBLY SHALL CONVENE TO DISCUSS THE CYPRUS PROBLEM TODAY

TRNC Assembly shall convene with a general agenda on the Cyprus problem today.
