LEADERS SHALL COME TOGETHER AND COMPLETE FIRST ROUND OF TALKS TODAY

The first round of full-fledged talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem will be completed today. The first round of talks conducted between President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias will be completed when the two leaders meet tomorrow. The second phase of the talks will be resumed on the 3rd of September following a three week summer break.

The UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor to Cyprus met with the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias the day before yesterday and speaking after the meeting, the UN Special Advisor said that he was still ‘cautiously optimistic’ regarding a solution to the Cyprus Problem.

He said that there was good will on both sides towards reaching an agreement, adding that it will be exactly one year since the talks began when the two leaders resume the talks on the 3rd of next month.” I use these meetings to talk through the issues with the two leaders so that I understand their perspectives and the issues they’re dealing with” said Downer.

Earlier on Monday, the UN Special Advisor was received by President Mehmet Ali Talat. The UN envoy had told reporters at the end of that meeting that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon was very satisfied with the ongoing negotiations process.

ERCAKICA: “EXACT METHODOLOGY AND PROGRAM OF NEGOTIATIONS PROCESS THAT WILL BE FOLLOWED DURING SECOND ROUND OF TALKS IS HOPED TO BE DECIDED”

Presidential spokesperson Hasan Ercakica gave his weekly press briefing at the Presidential Palace and informed the press about the development on the Cyprus negotiations process.

Ercakica announced that during today’s meeting between President Mehmet Ali Talat and the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Dimitris Christofias the first phase of the Cyprus negotiations process is expected to be concluded. During today’s meeting the exact methodology and the program of the negotiations process that will be followed during the second round of talks is hoped to be decided on also, said Ercakica.

Stating that the Turkish side will be taking full advantage of the break that is to be given to the talks between the 6th of August and the 3rd of September, the Presidential spokesman said that they will be informing the political parties at the TRNC Parliament and officials of the Republic of Turkey of the developments and exchange views regarding the process.

Referring to the works being carried out at the Yesilirmak crossing point, Hasan Ercakica said today an exercise will be carried out regarding the emergency crossings of ambulances.

‘An ambulance from the TRNC and one from the South will be crossing over tomorrow’, said Ercakica and added that ‘in the meantime the UN has been conducting the necessary research for the construction of the road that will be built in the area’.

He also announced that a sub committee is meeting today to discuss the prevention of the television and radio frequency problems that are being experienced between the North and the South of the island.

Answering journalists’ questions at the end of the briefing, the Presidential spokesman said that a date hadn’t yet been made as to when President Talat and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon will meet but he did confirm that President Talat and Dimitris Christofias may be meeting with the UN Secretary General in New York or at another location.

Reiterating that the Turkish side gave great importance to the United Nations active role during the Cyprus negotiations process, Mr. Ercakica said ‘the UN’s support to the second phase of the Cyprus talks that will begin on the 3rd of September is very important for the continuation of the Cyprus negotiations process.

CALL FROM ASSOCIATION OF MARTYRS FAMILIES TO USA AMBASSADOR: ‘GO HOME MR. URBANCIC’

Stating that USA Ambassador to Lefkosa Frank Urbancic said ‘Turkish Cypriots are not Turkish’, President of Association of Martyrs Families Ertan Ersan criticised this and said ‘Go Home Mr. Urbancic’.

Ersan added that Urbancic made a mistake by discussing Turkish Cypriot peoples’ being Turkish or not because Turkish Cypriot people resisted in Cyprus towards all kind of cruelty and massacre for years and protected their identity. Ersan invited USA representative to visit the Associations and meet with the historical realities.

ERENKOY RESISTANCE AND MARTYRS SHALL BE COMMEMORATED IN ERENKOY

It was stated that Erenkoy resistance, which is essential part of struggle of the Turkish Cypriots towards Greek Cypriot-Greece attacks, and martyrs will be commemorated on 8th August, Saturday in Erenkoy with a ceremony and other activities.

Moreover, it was stated that President Mehmet Ali Talat will participate in the 45. Anniversary of Erenkoy Resistance which will start at 10:00.
