RESOLUTION, BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR

The President, Mehmet Ali Talat and the President of Turkey, Abdullah Gul indicated that their aim is to come up with a solution for Cyprus Issue, untill the end of the year.

At the joint press conference, President Mehmet Ali Talat said:

“It must be understood clearly. In order to come up with a solution, the Greek Cypriot Administration must cooperate with us; if not, and try to supress North Cyprus and Turkey through the EU, and thus delay the process, it won’t be our responsibility.”

Negotiations which will be made till the first week of August, will continue in September, said the President Talat and added:

“We don’t know when the negotiations are going to end up. But our aim is to find a comprehensive solution, untill the end of the year. Needless to say that the comprehensive solution will be put into vote of Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots and it will be implemented only in case of an acception. Once we are disposed to do that, we can make it.”

The President of Turkey Abdullah Gul said that the ultimate goal is to ensure a permanent peace in Cyprus, within the framework of a comprehensive solution, and eventually create a cooperation field in the EU for Turkey, Greece and the whole Island. Gul also said: “For this purpose, we are willing to end up negotiations quickly and, if possible, want to hold a referendum on it untill the end of the year.

Gul also stated that the Treaty of Guarantee and Alliance concerns Turkey, Greece and England and Turkey pays attention to the continuity of these international treaties.

EROGLU: “IT IS HARD TO ASSENT, SINCE THE GREEK CYPRIOTS TRY TO DEPRIVE US FROM OUR GOVERNMENT AND GUARANTEE”

5 martyrs, that were ambushed by Greek Cypriots on 12th July 1958 while they were on the way for work from Inonu village to Magusa, and 6 martyrs from Inonu who died during the national struggle period were commemorated through ceremonies. In his speech, The Prime Minister Eroglu said “As long as Greek Cypriots try to deprive us from our government and gurantee, and adopt the mentality of “We won’t renounce Republic of Cyprus, Turkish Cypriots will be minorities on this republic”, it is hardly possible to come up with a solution. Eroglu also stated that the solution is possible only if the Greek Cypriots also desire that and added: “It is meaningless to study hard on negotiation table and accept Greek Cypriots to step back, as if it is only Turkish Cypriots who wants resolution. They are recognized by the whole world, member of the EU and does not need a solution. They are taking the process to a dead end with the mentality ‘Turkish Cypriots have to compensate’.

The Prime Minister Eroglu emphasized that during the negotiation process, they must show the world that the founding states are on equal basis and sovereign. Eroglu also added that it is possible for a resolution, only if the problems are soluted in favour of Turkish Cypriots; otherwise the negotiations will persist.
