OZGURGUN: `RIGHTS OF THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS USURPED`

Minister of Foreign Affairs Huseyın Ozgurgun reacted strongly to the election of all six seats allocated for Cyprus at the European Parliament by Greek Cypriots.

Pointing out that two of these seats should be filled by Turkish Cypriots and not by Greek Cypriots, he said `the rights of the Turkish Cypriots were usurped`.

The Minister said it was unacceptable for the European Parliament to ignore the rights of the Turkish Cypriots to elect their representatives while the 1960 agreements give a right to them to choose their Community Assembly.

He reminded that the two seats allocated for the Turkish Cypriots at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe were being kept empty and that Turkish Cypriot representatives have been attending the meetings of the PACE.

Criticizing the European Union’s attitude towards the issue, he described the move as an attack against the existence of Turkish Cypriot People in Cyprus.

He also warned that it would not be possible to reach an agreement in Cyprus as long

Those who are capable of reading can refer to the Treaty of Lausanne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_lausanne), under the terms of which Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and a few other European nations agreed that there was no Turkish minority in Greece, but that there was a Mulsim minority. The rights of Greece's Muslim minority are very strictly protected, even to the detriment of Greece's non Muslim citizens: the quota for civil service jobs and university places reserved for Greece's muslim minority far exceeds the size of this minority in relative terms.

Turkey would do well to explain how the rights of Turkey's Christian minority of Istanbul, Imbros, and Tenedos, whose rights were also supposedly guaranteed by Turkey under the terms of the Treaty of Lausanne, have been protected. Oh wait - those minority Christians had their properties expropriated and were forced either under economic sanction or by the threat of violence to leave.

The so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus would do well to explain how the rights of Greek Cypriots formerly living in the occupied north of Cyprus were respected. Oh right - the entire Greek-speaking population of occupied northern Cyprus was ethnically cleansed from their homes during Turkey's "peace operation" in 1974.

The Turkish brains trust can then further explain how it is that if everyone agreed that there was no Turkish minority in Greece in 1923 when Turkey signed the Treaty of Lausanne, and since there has been no migration of Turks to Greece since then, how it is that there is now all of a sudden a Turkish minority in Greece?

Could it be that Turkey is merely looking for levers to involve itself in Greek affairs, just like it involves itself in the affairs of the Republic of Cyprus via its military occupation?

The hypocricy of Turkey, and the illegal, illegitimate, and internationally unrecognised TRNC is breathtaking.
