NEW ERA IN TRNC

According to official provisional results announced by the High Electoral Council the UBP gained 44% of the votes 26 seats in the 50-member TRNC Parliament, enough to form a government alone.

The UBP was followed by the Republican Turkish Party – United Forces which won the support of just over 29% of the voters.

The Democrat Party gained 10.65%, the Communal Democracy Party 6.87% and the Freedom and Reform Party 6.20% of the votes cast.

With these figures, the CTP will have 15 seats, the DP 5, the TDP 2 and the ORP 2 seats in the Parliament.

Two parties, the United Cyprus Party and the Politics for People Party and 8 independents have failed to exceed the 5% national electoral threshold to gain seats in the TRNC parliament.

Compared to the elections of February 20, 2005, the UBP has increased the number of votes it received by 12 percent. In 2005, the UBP had won 19 seats in the TRNC Parliament.

The ruling Republican Turkish Party (CTP) which won only 15 seats had won 24 seats in the elections of 2005 CTP's number of votes received yesterday dropped by 15 percent when compared to the elections of 2005.
