SWEDISH PARLIAMENTARIAN MEETS WITH NGO’S İN TRNC

The Chairman of the Swedish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Goran Lennmaker is having contacts in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. As part of his contacts, the Swedish MP met with the representatives of some Non-governmental Organizations which have activities in the human rights field.

Lennmarker also visited the President of Cyprus Turkish Human Rights Foundation, Emine Erk.

In the meeting the Swedish MP stated that he was in the island before the referenda for the Annan Plan, and told about how they were pleased with the majority of “yes” votes in North Cyprus, and frustrated with the majority of “no” votes in South Cyprus.

Stating that there is consensus in Swedish Parliament for a solution in Cyprus and they are supporting Turkey’s EU membership, Lennmarker underlined that this is very important.

Goran Lennmarker said “I hope we will obtain better results this time, compared to 5 years ago”


THE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES BIOLOGISTS ASSOCIATION COUNCIL MEETS IN TRNC

The European Countries Biologists Association Council Meeting is being held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The opening ceremony for the council meeting, which will continue until the 28th of March, was held yesterday at Büyük Han in Lefkoşa with the attendance of President Mehmet Ali Talat.

In the speeches it is stated that world has been experiencing a difficult period in terms of biology as well as economy, and biologists have a word to say for the creation of sustainable conditions to promote the fields of health, food and energy.

The Meeting is being attended by representatives of biology associations from 17 European countries. In the opening ceremony the President of the Turkish Cypriot Biologists Association Niyazi Turkseven, the President of the European Countries Biologists Association Harm Jaap Smith and President Mehmet Ali Talat delivered speeches.


FM AVCI RECEIVED AMERICAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Turgay Avci, gave a briefing on the Cyprus issue to 24 American students and 2 academicians from “Peace and Conflict Resolution” department of the American University in Washington. Avci received the students group headed by Prof. Dr. Eleftherios Micheal and Prof. Dr. Istar Guven at Foreign Ministry Conference Hall and briefed them on the developments of the Cyprus issue.



GREEK CYPRIOTS TRUST LESS TO JUSTICE

The Greek Cypriot daily Phileleftheros reported that after the Greek Cypriot High Criminal Court’s decision to clear the 10 Greek Cypriot police officers, who were accused of assaulting and humiliating 2 university students in December 2005,of all charges and let them walk free, the Cypriot people started to think that there is no justice and safety in South Cyprus, and started to trust less to justice.

CHARTER FLIGHTS TO BE LAUNCHED BETWEEN ROMANIA AND THE TRNC

Charter flights will shortly be launched between Romania and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the Romanian tour operator ‘Mestro DMC Tour’ have signed a protocol which aims to bring tourists to the island in 2009.

According to the Protocole, Maestro DMC tour will arange 28 charter flights between 8 June - 17 September 2009. The flights will be from Bucharest and Cluj Naoca, two times a week and will bring a total number of 2800 tourists to the TRNC.
