TURKEY – USA JOINT STATEMENT IS A STRONG MESSAGE TO GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION

Deputy Prime Minister – Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has said a joint Turkish-US declaration had given a strong message to the Greek Cypriot administration.

The joint statement issued during Secretary of State Hillary Clinton\'s recent visit to Turkey underlined the need to bring about a settlement to the Cyprus problem under the UN\'s auspices and the removal of the isolation on the Turkish Cypriot People.

\"This declaration is a response to the Greek Cypriot Administration which thinks that it could keep the Turkish Cypriots in peril forever by exerting pressure and maintaining the international economic isolation on them with the strength of being a member of the EU\" Turgay Avci told the Anatolian News Agency.

Calling the statement as very important, he said `it gives the message that it’s wrong to think that the negotiations will continue for another 40 years and the isolation on the Turkish Cypriot people will remain for another 40 years`.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot People have always been in support of a solution, he complained that the Turkish Cypriot Side was still being kept under pressure and isolation in spite of the strong support it gave to the UN peace plan in 2004.

Mr Avci noted that the joint statement was an answer to the continuation of the isolation, which he called as an unjust move.

Referring to US President Barrack Obama’s coming visit to Turkey , the Minister said the joint statement was an indication of the policies to be pursued by Washington in the new process ahead.
