POLITICAL EQUALITY IS NOT TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION

Tufan Erhurman, a Public Law expert, member of President Mehmet Ali Talat’s negotiations delegation and a DAU Academician, stated that the Greek Cypriot side’s proposal of “single list” especially on federal executive was against the principles of “bi-communality” and “political equality” included in all UN documents accepted since 1977.

Pointing out that the proposal does not perceive the willpower of the two peoples of Cyprus as separate and instead takes Cyprus as a single community; Erhurman added that the proposal which ignores the political equality of Turkish Cypriots offers the election of the President and Vice-President with a weighted ballot by the Greek Cypriot voters.

“Erhurman explained that although the calculation of the “weighted vote” offered together with the “single list” proposal of the Greek Cypriot side creates an impression of an advantage to the numerical minority towards increasing the value of Turkish Cypriot votes, as a result the executive system offered by the Greek Cypriot side will lead to the distortion of the Turkish Cypriot willpower and this is going to create a determinative effect.
