TALAT AND CHRISTOFIAS SHALL MEET TOMORROW

President Mehmet Ali Talat and the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Demetris Christofias shall meet in order to determine the procedure of the comprehensive negotiations.

The meeting will take start in the official residence of the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Cyprus-Chief of Mission Taye Brook Zerihoun in the UN controlled buffer zone at 10 o’clock.

Alexander Downer, the UN Secretary General’s new Cyprus Special Adviser will also participate in the meeting.

TALAT: “THERE IS NO LINK BETWEEN THE NEGOTIATIONS PROCESS AND OPENING THE GATES...”

President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that there is no link between the new negotiations process to be launched this week and the rejection of the demand by Greek Cypriots to use the Yesilırmak Gate for the religious ceremony at Ayios Mamas in the North.
President Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias will meet on Wednesday to launch the new negotiations process with the aim of finding a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem.

Talat stressed that the rejection of the Greek Cypriot villagers’ demand has nothing to do with the talks, the new negotiations process and the opening of new crossing points between the two sides.

He explained that the decision on the issue was taken after the evaluation of the Greek Cypriot application to the United Nations on the issue. These are issues, which sometimes, we are not even informed. Because, the issue is concerning the police, security and the Foreign Ministry’, the President said. He noted that the decision was taken after it was seen that a mass crossing through Yesilırmak could lead to some problems.

TALAT MET POLITICAL PARTY LEADERS

President Mehmet Ali Talat met with leaders and representatives of political parties with seats in the TRNC Parliament just before the meeting which shall take place on 3rd of September.


Speaking after the meeting, the leader of the main ruling party Republican Turkish Party Ferdi Sabit Soyer and the leader of the Freedom and Reform Party Turgay Avci expressed their full support to President Talat in the new process ahead.

AVCI: “FULL AND EFFICIENT GUARANTEE OF TURKEY IS VITAL FOR THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has strongly criticized Yorgos Yakovu, Greek Cypriot commissioner, for his statement that Turkey ’s guarantee is unacceptable.
In a written statement, Avci complained that an increased number of negative and unacceptable statements are being issued by Greek Cypriot authorities just days before the launch of comprehensive negotiations.

Deputy-Prime Minister Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has strongly criticized Yorgos Yakovu, for his statement that Turkey ’s guarantee is unacceptable. In a written statement, Avci complained that an increased number of negative and unacceptable statements are being issued by Greek Cypriot authorities just days before the launch of comprehensive negotiations.

The Foreign Minister criticized Yakovu for declaring Turkey ’s guarantee over the island as unnecessary and for issuing statements, which are completely contrary to the parameters on the Cyprus issue.
He stressed that Turkey ’s active and effective guarantee is vital for the Turkish Cypriot People and that it will continue to do so as long as the Turkish Cypriots exist on the island.
He noted that all the necessary regulations will be included in an agreement to be reached to make sure that Turkey ’s guarantee will not remain only on paper.

REPUBLIC’S ASSEMBLY CONVENES WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY SESSION

General Council of Republic’s Assembly is going to convene with an extraordinary session on Thursday with the call of TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat.

In the letter sent with the signature of Spokeswoman of Republic’s Assembly Fatma Ekenoğlu to the members of parliament, it was stated that an extraordinary session will be held with the request of President Mehmet Ali Talat.

The session where President Talat is going to brief the General Council of the Republic’s Assembly on Cyprus issue will not be opened to press.

STUDIES FOR BRINGING WATER WITH PIPELINES STARTED

Studies of the project which was on agenda for years for bringing water with pipelines from Turkey in 2013 started. The capacity of Gecitkoy dam is going to be increased from 2.5 million cubic meters to 25 million cubic meters. A total of 75 million cubic meters of water 35 million cubic meters of which is drinking water will be brought and collected in the Gecitkoy dam.

Elal stated that the geophysics studies started in the dam and pipe tender studies will be started in 2009 and the application will be started in 2010 and lastly the water will be brought in 2013. Elal also underlined that the 75 million cubic meters of water will answer to the country’s need.

37 SYRIANS WERE ARRESTED

37 Syrians who crossed to TRNC illegally from the Salamis Ruins shore line were arrested.

According to the information obtained from the police, it was stated that the Syrians, who were caught yesterday, were arrested and the investigation continues.
