LEADERS MEET TODAY

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat and leader of Greek Cypriot Administration Dimitris Hristofias will meet today within the framework of negotiations aiming to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Two leaders discussed the property issue at the last meeting. At today’s meeting, the agenda will be the property issue again. The leaders will continue to negotiate the criteria related with compensation, restitution and exchange.

“WE ARE EXPECTING PROPOSALS FROM GREEK CYPRIOTS”

Presidential Spokesman Hasan Ercakica stated that they expected the Greek Cypriot side to make a proposal on which method would be followed after the first round of the comprehensive negotiations.

Stating that the Greek Cypriots refused the proposal of Burgenstock-style meeting however they avoid discussing the method, Ercakica pointed out that they cannot make a proposal for the negotiations to continue till the end of time, so it will be true to expect a proposal from the Greek Cypriots.

Ercakica stated that the leaders will continue to discuss the property issue today and they expect the subject to be completed today or at the next meeting.

Replying the question how the property issue will be completed in a short time, Ercakica said it is impossible to present the balance sheet related with the phase reached, and added “while saying that the property issue will be completed, it does not mean that it will be ended with an agreement.”

Ercakica pointed out that the Greek Cypriot side accepted that there would be some criteria on property issue and these will be foreseen with restitution-exchange-compensation, however they want the validity of the previous ownerships and therefore this will collapse the system and he added “there is not any full agreement on this subject”.

ERCAKICA: “EFFORTS FOR LEGALISING THE USURPT RIGHTS
Referring to the upcoming EU parliamentary elections, the Presidential Spokesman reminded that 2 of the 6 seats in the European Parliament reserved for Cyprus belonged to Turkish Cypriots.
Ercakica called on the Greek Cypriot Side to keep those two seats empty until a comprehensive settlement is reached.
He also added that any attempt by Greek Cypriot political parties to name Turkish Cypriot candidates would only serve to usurp Turkish Cypriot rights within the European Parliament.
