PRESIDENT TALAT: “A HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY WAS MISSED DUE TO GREEK CYPRIOT REJECTION OF ANNAN PLAN”
The President Mehmet Ali Talat said that a historic opportunity to solve the Cyprus issue was missed due to Greek Cypriot rejection of the Annan Plan in 2004.
President Talat stated that the former Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos and his supporter, current Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias were responsible for the rejection of the Annan Plan and the consequent continuation of the non-solution of the Cyprus problem. He added that “A historic opportunity was missed in 2004 when the Greek Cypriots rejected the Annan Plan.”
Describing the start of comprehensive negotiations during Christofias’s term in office as a positive development, he said he was cautiously optimistic about a settlement on the island. President Talat has said that he is cautiously optimistic about a reaching a settlement on the Cyprus Problem.
Responding to a question on accusations made by the Greek Cypriot leader regarding making contradictory statements outside the negotiations process, the President called on Christofias to prove these claims.
BABACAN: ‘WE ARE SUPPORTING TWO LEADERS FOR A SOLUTION’
Turkish Foreign Minister and Chief Negotiator in the EU talks stated that they are supporting two Leaders to reach a comprehensive solution as early as possible.
Babacan made a meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyanni in New York and two ministers made a statement to the press.
In his statement the Turkish Foreign Minister said that there were two leaders on the island, both who were willing to solve the Cyprus Problem and this is an important opportunity that should not be missed. Babacan also added that his country is supporting the negotiations.
On the other hand Bakoyanni stated that they handled the Cyprus problem in the meeting and reminded that the negotiations has started in the island and underlined that Greek and Turkish sides are supporting two leaders for a solution.
TALAT AND CHRISTOFIAS HAVE BEEN SELECTED AS NOMINEE FOR “EUROPEAN OF THE YEAR“
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mehmet Ali Talat and the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Dimitris Cristofias have been selected as nominee for the ‘European of the year “awards.

OSCE HUMAN RIGHTS MEETING TO START TODAY
Human rights violations and problems experienced by the Turkish Cypriots will be discussed during the international meetings in Poland .
The Turkish Cypriots who were represented last year for the first time during the meetings of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), in which human rights were discussed, will be ready in Warsaw this year.
According to the information given by Turkish Cypriots Human Rights Foundation, during the summit which will start today and finish on 10th October, speeches in various issues and presentations will be observed under the heading of human rights.
During OSCE Human Rights meetings which will continue for two weeks, various non-governmental organization representatives will make speeches on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots. Moreover, the book named ‘Turkish Cypriots: Excluded Citizens of Europe’ will be distributed widely.
