TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR NATURA 2000 AREA MANAGEMENT AND PRESERVATION

The European Commission yesterday signed an agreement in a consortium in Poland in determining detailed plans in the preparation of management and preservation of 6 crucial protection areas and partook in a meeting with Turkish Cypriot representatives whereby the projects initial starting point was determined.

The 1.5 million Euro contract signed at the consortium under the auspices of the company NIRAS IC Sp. Zo.o. for the 6 regions are estimated to become Natura 2000 Zones in the event that a solution and reunification prevails in Cyprus.

In addition, the consortium will aim to develop the professional capacities of shareholders from the Turkish Cypriot community responsible for the protection of environment and nature. The three year project comprises of the inspection of the areas consisting of varying species of wildlife and birds and with accordance to the directives of Natura 2000, the protection of these areas will be promoted with preparations of managerial plans and campaigns increasing public awareness.

REFUGEES CAPTURED IN THE TRNC EXTRADIGHTED TO MERSIN

20 refugees of Syrian origin captured in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) were extradited to the Turkish city of Mersin and then transferred to the Mersin Branch Management for Foreigners.

According to reports in relation to the issue, the refugees whom had entered illegally were apprehended in the TRNC city of Famagusta by police and were later transferred to the Mersin city, Taşucu, by the Akfer Shipping Company.

It was later noted that the refugees were transferred to the Mersin Branch Management for Foreigners under police surveillance.

Authorities have informed that their investigation of the issue is continuing.
