ZERIHOUN: WE ARE ENCOURAGED

UN General Secretary’s Special Representative in Cyprus and UN Peace Forces Missions Chief Taye-Brook Zerihoun expressed that it was encouraging to see that the two leaders have taken initiative in determining the initial point of commencement of the negotiations.

Zerihoun reiterated that by advancing the process to contribute to the inititiatives, he could see that a solution could be attained from the new and positive atmosphere in Cyprus.

Mentioning that he was hopeful with respect to the new developments, Zerihoun added that that the two leaders were decisive in developing the peace phase and that he had supported them in their joint initiative.


GREEK CYPRIOT COURT REJECTS COURT CASE

The Greek Cypriot Supreme Court rejected the appeal made against the Greek Cypriot Administration by relatives to the missing persons in the villages Taşkent and Teraziköy.

The judgement of the Greek Cypriot Supreme Court was read yesterday. The relatives of the five missing persons whom were amassed wthin the two villages in 1974 and still remain as missing had made an appeal to the Greek Cypriot Supreme Court that the Greek Cypriot Administration had failed to fulfil their constitutive obligations, had failed to conduct an effective inspection of the relative missing persons and have refused to provide information to the relatives of the missing.

Preceding the judgment, the lawyer representing the relatives of the five missing persons’ Şefika Durduran underlined in her announcement that it is a constitutional obligation to provide information and to effectively investigate the fate of missing persons.

Making reference to the judgement made by the European Court of Human Rights in the “Varnava” case against Turkey for “…not fulfilling responsibilities for the missing Greek Cypriot persons in 1974 Peace Opration”, Durduran stated, “We contrarily claim that the Republic of Cyprus has not fulfilled its obligations and despite the passing of so much time has not effectively investigated the fate of missing persons.”

Pointing out that just as the documents issued to them, the judgement of the court was made in Greek and added that their next steps will considered once the judgement is translated.

Durduran explained that despite that the official languages of the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus is both Turkish and Greek and that the documentation delivered by them as filed exhibits, replies made to them and court judgements were delivered in Greek. Durduran expressed the difficulties they had faced in translations of these replies and court
hearings.
