PRESIDENT TALAT: “THE SIDE WHICH MUST PROVE THEIR WILLINGNESS FOR A SOLUTION IS THE GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE”
President Mehmet Ali Talat announced that both the Turkish Cypriot side and the Greek Cypriot side and Turkey have both displayed great efforts in resolving the Cyprus problem and that it was no need to prove this. Talat underlined that it was the Greek Cypriot side which needed to prove their will for a solution and that they have changed their politics. Pointing out that as previously, Turkey today is continuing in supporting peace on the island, and that Christofias’ statements against Turkey will only poison the prevailing positive atmosphere.

DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER AVCI RETALIATES TO CHRISTOFIAS: “HE HAS CONSIDERED DEEPENING MISTRUST”


Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Turgay Avcı countered statements of the President of the Greek Cypriot Administration Demetris Christofias arguing that such accusations of insult against Turkey will only deepen mistrust between the two communitie. In his written statement Avcı reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot community firmly disputed accusations against Turkey for supposedly “occupying” Cyprus when, through international agreements, prevented Greek occupation of the island and the shedding of Turkish Cypriot blood. Avcı reminded that through the Turkish intervention, many lives of AKEL members including Christofias were saved from the Greek junta.

RYAN AND TITOV ARE ARRIVING TO CYPRUS

Progressive activities are continuing preceding the March 21 summit between President Mehmet Ali Talat and President of the Greek Cypriot Administration Christofias and the following opening of the Lokmacı Crossing. Within this framework, President Mehmet Ali Talat will be receiving England ’s special envoy for Cyprus , Joan Ryan, on Wednesday. President Talat will also meet with Russia ’s Deputy Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Vladimir Titov, on Friday.

WORK GROUP AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS WILL BE INFORMED
As agreed from the March 21 meeting with President of the Greek Cypriot Administration Christofias, President Mehmet Ali Talat will meet with Turkish Cypriot work group and committee members to inform them of strategies in which the Turkish Cypriot side will adopt. Work group and committee members from both sides will continue preparations through the end of the week and will meet on the weekend with the aim to be acquainted.
