Concerted action by Greek and Cypriot parliamentarians

The Greek and the Cypriot parliaments have outlined a joint course of action with a view to strengthen cooperation and draft concerted action with regard to Cyprus. The Speaker of the Greek Parliament Demetris Sioufas reiterated his firm support for a political settlement in Cyprus that would be viable and functional and be based on UN decisions and European Union laws and regulations. In statements to the press after meeting Christofias, Sioufas also said the solution must be a bizonal bicommunal federation, adding that the Greek parliament will continue to afford its support to efforts to find a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus. “We have exchanged views and I proposed to twin the libraries of our respective parliaments and offered time on the air waves of the Greek parliament TV to present the activities of the Cypriot parliament,” Sioufas said. They also agreed to broadcast jointly a programme to be aired on the Greco-cypriot radio station in London, with the support of the two parliaments, to promote the Greek language and culture. Christofias said there was identity of views and objectives on parliamentary affairs as well as on the question of Cyprus. “President Sioufas has proved to be a sound builder in that we are talking about practical moves to enhance our relations and to act together. He put forward two very specific proposals which will benefit Cyprus,” he added. He was full of praise about the use of the library of the Greek parliament, saying this would be “an invaluable gift, with a wealth of material.” He welcomed the presence of the Cypriot House on the airwaves of the Greek parliament TV, a move he said will develop further solidarity and cooperation. “Joint action in Britain will be an additional bonus for Greeks and Cypriots in the UK,” he concluded. Earlier today, Christofias discussed the question of Cyprus with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyianni. One must look very deep into the designs of the Turkish government with regard to Cyprus and I believe after February’s presidential elections in Cyprus, Athens and Nicosia will have to sit at the table to discuss future moves,” he said.
